Our Craft

The Making of a Crescent Candle
A look at the craft, the materials, and the careful testing behind every candle we create.
A candle seems to be a simple thing.
Wax in a glass jar. A wick running through the middle. A fragrance.
But if you start making candles yourself, you will quickly discover just how many things influence that small flame.
The type of wax. The strength of the fragrance. The jar. The wick. Even the temperature of the room while the candle is being poured.
No wonder candle-making is a time-honoured artisanal craft (called “chandlery”). It even has its own guild, The Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers, established in London in 1558.
Although a lot goes into making the perfect candle, we believe the end result should feel effortless to you.
- A steady flame.
- A fragrance that moves gently through the space.
- An atmosphere that feels calm rather than overpowering, allowing the evening to settle with grace and gratitude.
Here’s a peek at what goes on behind the scenes at Crescent Candles.
Step 1: The Inspiration

Our starting point is always a concept or a feeling deeply embedded in the rich heritage of the Islamic world.
Sometimes it comes from a place – the gentle peace of Madinah, the resonant scale of Makkah, the layered history of Jerusalem.
At other times, it comes from a meaningful moment in daily life: the worship at night, or the light heart that follows a journey of pilgrimage.
Sometimes our candles celebrate a cultural marvel, such as the Andalusian palace of Al-Hambra in Granada, or the serenity of the Persian Gardens.
These inspirations, all deeply steeped in the rich heritage of the Islamic world, guide the scent, mood and character of each candle.
It is this authentic emotional resonance that guides us in everything else that follows.
Step 2: The Fragrance

Finding the right scent for each concept is rarely quick.
A fragrance can smell wonderful when you open the bottle, yet behave completely differently once it’s blended into wax and warmed by a flame.
Some oils become too strong, causing headaches.
Others disappear almost entirely, leaving no scent.
So, we test. A lot.
Different oils, different strengths, sometimes several versions of the same idea.
Slowly, the balance begins to reveal itself – the point where the scent settles gently in the room – subtle enough to be comfortable but present enough to shape the atmosphere.
To achieve this, we work with fragrance oils created by experienced perfumers in the UK and France.
Unlike generic fragrance oils, we use only blends specifically approved for candle use and formulated to burn cleanly.
Our fragrances are all vegan-friendly, Halal, cruelty-free and free from parabens.
Step 3: The Wax

Wax choice has a potent influence on how a candle performs.
After experimenting with many options, we settled on premium-quality sustainable plant-based soy wax, chosen for several reasons:
- It holds fragrance well, both when sitting and when lit.
- It comes from renewable plant sources, so it's good for the environment
- It burns cleanly, so it's good for your body
For the person lighting the candle, the difference is clear and beautiful.
The flame behaves more calmly, and the scent carries through the room in a softer, more graceful way.
Step 4: The Wick

The wick may look small and humble, but its influence is mighty – controlling exactly how the candle behaves.
A wick that burns too quickly will create smoke, a pillar of flame, and scorch the fragrance before it has time to settle into the room.
One that burns too slowly may cause a tunnelling effect, failing to melt the wax fully across the jar.
You may have experienced these issues with some store-bought candles, where, unfortunately, this meticulous testing process is often skipped.
The wicks we use are also designed to be self-trimming. The tip gently bends away from the flame as they burn, helping to reduce soot build-up and maintain a clean, elegant burn.
Finding the right balance means we test different wick types and sizes for each unique wax and fragrance combination.
But once we’ve found it, the result is a thing of beauty.
Step 5: The Pour

Pouring a candle is a more complex process than many people expect.
Each wax has a specific temperature at which the oils and the wax bind and set with integrity.
If the fragrance isn’t stirred long enough, the scent will not distribute evenly through the wax, resulting in uneven performance.
We test these temperatures carefully and pay attention to how the wax is stirred – always by hand for a specific duration.
We also take care of how quickly we pour the wax into the jar. If poured too fast, bubbles and even sinkholes can appear in the wax.
These small details influence how the candle sets and how consistent the fragrance will be – from the first burn to the final one.
Step 6: The Cure

Once the candle has been poured, the work pauses for a while.
Fragrance oils need time to bind fully with the wax.
Candle makers refer to this stage as “curing”.
Without it, the scent can’t develop properly when the candle is lit.
We allow the candles to rest at an appropriate temperature until the fragrance has settled fully into the wax.
It’s a quiet stage, but one that, like good leather or cheese, is well worth the wait.
Step 7: The Trim

Getting the right wick length is a critical part of the process.
If it is too short, the flame may struggle to establish itself.
If it is too long, the flame can grow too large and unstable.
We use specially designed 3D-printed tools to trim each wick to an optimal height, so the candle performs well from the very first light.
When everything is working in harmony, the flame remains elegant and steady, the candle burns evenly, and the wax melts across the surface, giving what’s called a good “burn pool”, rather than tunnelling down the centre.
It also prevents the wick from “mushrooming”, or “clubbing”, where lumps of black soot gather on the end of the wick due to incomplete combustion.
When that perfect balance is in place, the fragrance releases gradually, at a pace that feels natural rather than rushed, filling the room without fuss.
Step 8: The Finish

Before the candles are packed, a few finishing touches bring everything together.
- The jar is hand-buffed, so it reflects candlelight softly in the evening.
- The surfaces are inspected to ensure the wicks are centred, and the wax presents a clean, smooth look.
- The lid is then carefully fitted to help preserve the scent between uses.
- We also add the required safety labelling so you know your candle complies with UK product regulations.
- None of these details is especially dramatic on its own, but taken together, they ensure your candle performs exactly as you would wish.
The Result

All this work happens so that,
when you light Crescent Candles,
nothing distracts from the moment.
- The match is struck...
- The wick catches...
- The flame holds steady...
- The fragrance unfolds gently...
